Compton, Jr., George Frederick and Helen S. Carroll Scholarship
The George Frederick Compton, Jr. and Helen S. Carroll Scholarship was created in September 2024 to support The University of Akron School of Law students who have an interest in education and labor law.
Fred and Helen were both distinguished education law lawyers who dedicated their careers to representing public boards of education in Ohio. Fred, born in 1948, had a remarkable career, with a practice centered on labor relations and education law. He represented school boards in high-profile cases, including at the United States Supreme Court. Helen, born in 1952, focused her legal career on education and labor law, earning recognition as a Best Lawyer in America for her expertise. She was deeply involved in the legal community, holding memberships and leadership positions in various bar associations. Both Helen and Fred worked at Roetzel & Andress until their retirement in 2022. Both were previously partners at Whalen & Compton LPA, a firm Fred founded with Dennis Whalen, that played a significant role in Ohio's education law landscape. Their lives were marked by professional excellence and a shared commitment to supporting the education system through legal advocacy. Fred passed away on August 3, 2024. The couple shared their life with Helen's service dog, Titus, affectionately known as "Titus the Law Dog" at Roetzel's Akron office.
The George Frederick Compton, Jr. and Helen S. Carroll Scholarship was established as part of We Rise Together, the Campaign for The University of Akron.
