Dowey, James L. and Carol S. Scholarship in Engineering
The James L. and Carol S. Dowey Scholarship in Engineering was established in 2000, and revised in 2018, to provide incentive and support for a talented engineering student(s) in The University of Akron’s College of Engineering. Jim Dowey graduated from the college in 1972 with a degree in electrical engineering, while Carol Stalker Dowey holds a degree from the University in Political Science/Criminal Justice.
Following graduation, Jim completed various assignments in engineering and management for Akron Standard Division of Eagle-Picher Industries, Inc., ultimately earning the title of President and leading the firm’s transition to ITW Quality Measurement Systems Group. Retaining the title of President, Jim capped his 28-year career at the firm overseeing a group of global manufacturing companies of capital equipment for the tire and automotive industries. Jim joined Air Enterprises, Inc. as President and COO in 2000 and went on to Akron Special Machinery in 2005, serving as Vice President of Operations. He joined Smithers Group in 2007 as Vice President and Managing Director for Rapra Technology, and in 2008 became President of Smithers Rapra, retiring in 2016. In addition to his membership on The University of Akron College of Engineering’s Advancement Council, Jim is a past member of the College of Business Administration’s Advancement Council.
The James L. and Carol S. Dowey Scholarship in Engineering shall be awarded to a talented and eligible engineering student, or students, at The University of Akron.
Scholarships are awarded annually and applied directly to student accounts. Award amounts and number of recipients may vary depending on available funds. Candidates will be identified by the College of Engineering and final selection will be made by Jim and Carol Dowey.
