Dunlap, Dr. James W. Endowed Scholarship
The Dr. James W. Dunlap Endowed Scholarship was established in 2008 by individuals who graduated from The University of Akron College of Business (formerly known as the College of Business Administration) during Dr. Dunlap's tenure as Dean of the college. The fund was established to show their sincere appreciation for his leadership while serving as Dean of the College of Business, and to show the value they placed on his friendship both during his tenure and after. Dr. Dunlap is currently the longest tenured Dean of the College of Business, serving from 1970-1989. His leadership and support of student activities greatly assisted the growth and development of many students during his years of service to the College of Business. Dean Dunlap was always a favorite with students because of his concern and dedication to the students and therefore he is affectionately remembered as "The Student's Dean."
During his tenure with The University of Akron, Dean Dunlap oversaw a college whose enrollment tripled. He is credited with building a strong foundation on which the College of Business could grow into the future. For example, The College of Business and The George W. Daverio School of Accountancy earned AACSB accreditation at both the undergraduate and graduate levels during his time as Dean. In addition, the College of Business gained national recognition for its student organizations with honoraries such as Beta Alpha Psi and Pi Sigma Epsilon winning top national honors. He recognized the emergence of international business markets, particularly in Asia, and instituted programs to expose students to this area of growth.
Recipients of The Dr. James W. Dunlap Endowed Scholarship will be at the junior or senior academic level, enrolled in the College of Business, and pursuing any one of the college's academic programs. First consideration will go to students who show strong interest and participation in the College of Business student organizations and campus-wide University of Akron student organizations. The Dunlap Scholar(s) should maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
The College of Business Scholarship Committee will identify a list of eligible candidates for the scholarship. This list will then be shared with Anthony Cox, Chairman of The Dr. James W. Dunlap Endowed Scholarship Committee, for review and selection.
Scholarship recipients will receive the full scholarship amount. The scholarship will first be applied to the recipient's student account to cover tuition, fees, on-campus housing, and meal plan costs. Any remaining funds will then be disbursed directly to the student. The award can also be used for education expenses not charged to the student account but necessary for coursework, such as textbook and course materials. Awards used for purposes other than qualified educational expenses are reportable and may be taxable to the recipient.
